All that came to a tragic end when the Nazis rose to power. Whereas able to survive the persecutions and pogroms in the eastern European countries, from which these refugees had fled, they could not escape the incessant and ruthless war of Genocide, waged by Nazi Germany and their collaborators against the European Jewry.
This compelling story is about the author and his family, of his friends and of other persons who lived in, or passed through this unique area of Berlin N-54. It deals with the post-Great War years of the 1920s; the ominous and turbulent inter-war era of the 1930s, and the cataclysmic “Götterdämmerung” of the Second World War in the 1940s.
It recounts the persecution and suffering of the Jewish people in Berlin and their deportations to the extermination camps: the authors defiance of punitive decrees and resistance against Nazi tyranny; his escape and clandestine life as a Christian, under the pseudonym of a former concentration camp SS guard, and ultimately....his survival against prohibitive odds.
