He had led the migration of Bohemian Paris across the city from Montmartre to Montparnasse; he had helped formulate the principles of Cubism, having written one of the first books on the subject, and coined the word "Surrealist"; and he had demonstrated in his own work those innovations we have come to associate with the most vital investigations of the avant-garde. This bilingual, illustrated edition of The Selected Writings of Apollinaire, the only representative collection in English translation, begins with a comprehensive critical Introduction by the translator, Roger Shattuck. The next section is devoted to poetry. Included here are almost half of Apollinaire’s two best-known volumes, Alcools and Calligrammes, as well as a selection from five other books, and the long love poem La Chanson du Mal-Aimé in its entirety. The prose section leads off with "L’Esprit Nouveau et les Poetes", a seminal discussion of modern poetry that anticipates such movements as Dada and Futurism. This is followed by Apollinaire’s almost unobtainable "Introduction to Baudelaire and Oneirocriticism", an early experimental work composed in a style prophetic of Surrealist automatic writing. The subject includes the wider issues of socioeconomic impacts, political economy, groundwater institutions, access to other resources like energy and land, approaches to resource governance and management and specifically integrating evidence-based science into management decisions.

This book addresses these information shortfalls and provides a consolidated and cross-disciplinary source of information and documentation of realities and challenges of contemporary agricultural groundwater use and management in poverty-prone areas of Asia. It draws on primary data collected in the course of an innovative, cross-coordinated and inter-disciplinary fieldwork programme, covering those regions in Asia that significantly depend on groundwater for agricultural livelihoods. Hafemeister, J.D., Ph.D., a law professor and psychologist who has taught at numerous law schools, including most recently the University of Virginia, and Douglas Mossman, M.D., a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. They join Christopher Slobogin, J.D., LL.M., the Milton Underwood Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University Law School, who was a co-author on previous editions of the book, and Ralph Reisner, Professor of Law, Emeritus, University of Illinois-Champaign College of Law, one of the initial authors of this casebook. Chapter One of the book provides a primer on mental disorders, mental health treatment and the professionals who provide it, and the complicated mechanisms for financing mental health care. The remaining four chapters of Part I of the book examine the law regulating the mental health professions, including administrative licensing, malpractice law, informed consent doctrine, and confidentiality and privilege rules (including a detailed treatment of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)). Part II explores how the law affects the liberty and property interests of people with a mental disorder in five chapters entitled “Mental Health Professionals and Expertise,” “Mental Disorder and Criminal Law,” “Civil Commitment,” “Competency Determinations,” and “Post-Commitment Issues.” Part III consists of two chapters that discuss the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Social Security law, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act (FHA). Fundamentals of Ethics for Scientists and Engineers represents a new approach to introductory ethics that is both practical and accessible. Classical virtue theory is employed to provide a time-tested, simple, and easily remembered basis for ethical reasoning. The text is modularized for easy use in both stand-alone ethics courses and as self-contained units within engineering core courses. It is accompanied by an instructor's manual that includes a comprehensive set of sample lectures and course assignments, detailed homework solutions, and many helpful hints for teaching an ethics course.
To ground the ethical analysis in practical reality, each chapter contains a real-life case together with several fictional cases. The fictional cases breathe renewed vigor into the study of ethics by employing a new learning device: the "ethical serial." Each fictional case can be understood individually, but the cases are also unified by use of a single set of college-aged characters whose personalities are developed throughout the book. These characters mimic real people far more closely than those in other texts and act in situations that are directly familiar to students.
The book is composed of four units. The first two focus on ethical reasoning, outlining within the context of science and engineering the notions of character formation and intention central to virtue theory. To prepare students to handle complex ethical questions, these units extend virtue theory in a readily understandable way, accounting systematically for the consequences that follow an ethical decision. The second two units focus on practical issues such as intellectual property, conflict of interest, whistle blowing, and authorship in scientific publication. These units also treat more advanced topics like risk, resource allocation, conflicting ethical methods, and intuition in ethical decision making.
